*Circus School [Note from Anne Mountfield, 14 Sep 2000]
'I have just had chance to check out my book of Portsmouth Churches and it says that the Circus Church "had no parish, was never consecrated.......it was privately owned by a Board of Trustees, who drew up its constitution."

It derived its strange title from "Hengler's Equestrian Circus", where mission services were first held. This wooden building in Lion Gate Road was aquired by St John's Church, Portsea, the staunchly Evangelical Church. It was intended to be a mission centre, especially for Dockyard workers and mid-day services were a regular occurance.

In 1863 a permanent Chapel was built in Surrey Street."

It goes on to say that the Trust still survives (at least at the time of writing 1989) and has established a similar foundation at St John's Church, Fareham.

Hope this helps. There are a few more details of the description of the interior of the church and pictures of both the original church and the interior of the Church in Surrey Street if you are interested but there is no mention of the school.'

Extract from Chamberlain's Portsmouth Directory 1887-1888: The Circus Mission Proprietary Chapel, Surrey Street, Landport the Rev. J. C. Martin, M.A., Incumbent. There are about 1,500 sittings, of which half are free. It was erected with the School-room adjoining, in the year 1865, at a cost of nearly 4,000. The
Schoolroom has been enlarged twice since at a further cost of 700, and subsequently an Infant Schoolroom with class room over has been erected on land adjoining at a further cost of 370."
