1916: Moved to Downers Farm, Chale

1918-25: When George Whittington retired as Carrier, Jack, who lived at a small farm called 'Downers' at Chale, bought him out. Jack travelled the same route for several years, from Walpan corner at Southdown through Atherfield and Yafford into Newport, using the George Inn as his base. Jack provided the only route from Chale through Shorwell to Newport. This route covered many scattered homes and farms, and his customers often had to walk long distances to catch their Carrier. Jack had the usual van with canvas tilt and had slots along the side of the tilt inside into which he would place newspapers and magazines for his customers. The onset of motor transport made Jack's horse-drawn van less popular, and in 1925 he gave up the business. (Extract from "Put Out The Flag" by Derek Sprake, The story of the Isle of Wight Carriers, 1860-1960).

The following is according to Derek Sprake in a talk based on Put Out The Flag given at the IWFHS Annual Conference 2015:
"Another carrier was Jack Downton, who lived in Chale, but his route only commenced at Shorwell, so he never picked up anything from Chale to Shorwell. One of his customers was a Mrs Woodford, who asked him often to do 'a little job about the house' - or at least that's what they used to call it. Derek's father told him of one house they used to visit where he was frequently asked to go upstairs and 'help move the bed' - Derek was kept downstairs with a cup of tea while the 'moving' went on upstairs. But Derek didn't go into any more detail on that, and we are still not sure if it was an euphemism for something else entirely. Back to Mrs Woodford, who asked
Jack Downton one time for a new toilet seat ... and fit it on his return. She shouted after him as he left "Make sure you get the right size", to which he replied "If you bends over, Mrs Woodford,I'll measure your backside, and we'll make sure we gets it right", because pleasing the customer was very important".

1926: Recorded as a dairy farmer in 1926 when Audrey married.
