CHALE - Death of Mrs Downton. Much regret was felt at the sudden death on Sunday week of Mrs M Downton, wife of Mr A J Downton, at the age of 70. She attended morning service at North End Methodist Church, and during the singing of the first hymn collapsed and died. Dr L Way was called, but could only pronounce life extinct. Mrs Downton was a regular attendant at the Church and a valued helper in the Sunday-school. The funeral was on Thursday week, the Rev H Jackson officiating, with Mrs A Bullock at the organ. The hymns "When I survey" and "Peace, perfect peace" were sung, and Mr Jackson paid tribute to Mrs Downton's devotion to the church. The interment followed at the Parish Churchyard. The chief mourners were Mr A J Downton (husband), Mrs A Keen, Mrs L Chiverton, Mrs H Guy, and Mrs W Terry (daughters), Messrs A Keen, L Chiverton, H Guy, and W Terry (sons-in-law), Mrs J Greening (sister), Mr and Mrs G Hardy, Mrs G Downton, and Mr T Downton (brothers and sisters-in-law), Miss J Carnon and Mrs A Young (nieces), Messrs C and A Greening (nephews), Mr and Mrs F Hayward, Mr H Cheek, and Miss E Cheek (cousins). Others attending were Messrs L Burt, A Bullock, G Linington, C Legg (Whitwell), S H Prideaux, G Wiggins, J H Brown, JP., T Wall, T H Sprake, and F Mew, Messrs F Draper and F Thorn (representing Pyle, Billingham, and Corve landworkers), Mr A Newnham (also representing Mrs Newnham), Mesdames A Bullock, L Burt, B Downer, P Coward, A Bull, J Salter, R Snow, J Whittington, , and L Downer, Mr and Mrs D Peak, the Misses Morris (Stroud Green), R Morris, E Wiggins, and L Plumbley (also representing Mr W Plumbley), Mrs J Cheverton, and Mrs L Cotton. The arrangements were made by Mr J Whittington, and the many floral tributes included those from North End Methodist Church.
