Death of Mr William Ryall - General regret is felt at the death, which took place here on Monday evening, of Mr William Ryall, after a long and painful illness, at the age of 60. Practically a life-long resident [of Chillerton], deceased was well known in the village, where he for many years had rendered well, though unobtrusively, valued and much appreciated service, particularly in connection with the Bible Christian Chapel, of which he had been treasurer, having succeeded the late Mr J Cheek in that position some four years ago. For nearly 20 years he was the superintendent of the Sunday-school and for 30 years the secretary of the Band of Hope, and in both positions he manifested much devotion to the interests of the young who came under his guidance and earnest solicitude for their well-being. His death is a great loss to the chapel and village and much sympathy is felt with the widow and family in their bereavement. The funeral took place yesterday (Friday) afternoon at Carisbrooke Cemetery, in the presence of many of the Sunday-school teachers and children and other sympathising friends, testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The widow and other members of the family attended, and those following included Mrs Westmore, Miss Groves (secretary of the Sunday-school), and Messrs G Norman, E Gray (Wootton), J Wadham (Wootton), Matthews (Shanklin), S Allen, T Morgan, and G Gerrett. The following members of the deceased's Church acted as bearers: Messrs W Marsh (acting superintendent of the Sunday-school), Chiverton, T Coombes, and E Allen. The Rev. A E Dymond, of Newport, impressively officiated, and in the prayers made feeling allusion to the high Christian character and life of the deceased. At the conclusion of the service at the graveside the children and others assembled around the grave and sang "Safe in the arms of Jesus". There were many floral tokens, inscribed in terms of the warmest affection and sympathy, including one large artificial wreath "In loving remembrance from the Sunday-school and friends of the Chillerton Bible Christian Church". Mrs Ryall, the widow, has received a letter from the Countess Pappenheim, of Gatcombe Park, in whose employ Mr Ryall was for several years, expressing her practical sympathy with Mrs Ryall and the family in their great bereavement.
