Many documents on file pertaining mainly to business accs./receipts in estate but not transcribed as adding no useful family information. Emily was appointed sole executrix and beneficiary in the will, which is standard in format. She was also beneficiary. An inventory included in the file is quite varied, many tools etc to do with the building & carpentry trade and one or two surprising additions which` may be of interest:

1 sow, 4 young pigs, 1 cow, 1 boar, 8 donkeys, trap, hearse, 2 coffins, "4 ditto native", drilling machine, mealie tank (a common colonial accoutrement), chaff cutter, forge, anvil, carpenters' benches, wheelbarrows, etc.

Newspaper report in 1925 (Isle of Wight County Press) "Chillerton Colonist dies at Natal"
"Mr Alfred J Ryall, son of the late Mr William Ryall, who was born at Chillerton in January, 1869, died at Richmond, Natal, on May 19 after a long and painful illness. The deceased, who was a builder and contractor, went out to South Africa in 1891, and settled at Pietermaritzburg. Ten years afterwards he transferred his business to Richmond, a neighbouring town, and there he built so many houses that it might be said of him as is stated of Sir Christopher Wren in St Paul's, 'if you would see his monument, look around'. Mr Ryall married a Miss Emily Annie Weeden, who is left with a family of six sons and three daughters. Of the latter two are married. Mr Ryall was a member of the Bible Christian Church before emigrating, and afterwards he was attached to the Wesleyan Church. The funeral was attended by a large number of mourners, and there were many beautiful wreaths. The service was conducted by the Rev A W Cragg, and the Rev J K Derry, according to the Wesleyan rites, and then the Sons of England service was read by the Chaplain, the Rev E W Bibby, vicar of the parish. The deceased had been a member of the Falkland Lodge, and 24 members formed a circle around the graveside."

Believed to have had 10 children, names of 5 originally known, but Thomas Pittis Ryall was added then later Francis Leslie, Albert & Doris, making 9 altogether. Possible that another child had died before Alfred's own death. This possibility has been strengthened by a hand-written note "10" in the margin of Emily's Death Notice. Newspaper reports show there were only 9 children when he died.

Some background re the "Pretoria" on which he travelled: A record-breaker in the early stages of her career, ran as a mail steamer until 1888. Her engines were then tripled, a hurricane deck was added and her yards were removed. Altered almost beyond recognition she was placed on the intermediate run. In 1895 she collided with the "Gaul" at Cape Town and as a result her commander Commander Capt Smythe was suspended by the Union Company. A petition signed by the Mayor of Cape Town, practically all the merchants of the City, and by the heads of the Government Departments was unsuccessful in procuring the reinstatement of the commander who had been with the Company for 22 years. In Feb 1897 the Pretoria was sold to the Quebec S S Company her original name being retained. She was abandoned at sea, on fire, in Feb 1902 but was subsequently salved. In 1907 she was acquired by the Khedival Mail S S Company and was renamed "Saidieh", trading in the eastern Mediterranean and in the Red Sea. She was one of the early victims in the German submarine campaign, being torpedoed without warning on June 1st, 1915, when 6 miles north-east of the Elbow Buoy.
