IVAN HEDLEY GUY FORMER Island footballer and champion golfer Ivan Hedley Guy has died, aged 67. Mr Guy died following a long illness at his home at Newport Road, Apse Heath - the house in which he was born. Mr Guy had lived on the Island all his life, except for military service, when he served in Egypt with the Royal Engineers. He was educated at Arreton Primary School and later at East Cowes Building School. He became a builder, working for his father, Hedley, who also owned Sandown Garage. A keen sportsman, he played football for the East Cowes Vics and Sandown Football Club, until a leg injury forced him to give up soccer. He then took up golf, becoming six-times champion of Ventnor Golf Club. He was later made an honorary life member of the club. Mr Guy leaves his wife, Wendy, and his three sons, Paul, who lives in Ventnor, and Mark and Simon, who live in Shanklin. He also leaves seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A service at Apse Heath Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 30, was followed by cremation. Publication Date: 02/07/99
